Statue of Peter the Great (Bronze Horseman).

In the foreground is the Senate Square of St. Petersburg and the Bronze Horseman monument erected to the founder of the city, Peter the Great (Peter Alekseevich Romanov 1672 - 1725), opened in 1778 under the direction of the French sculptor Etienne Maurice Falconet. In the background, on the right, are the Senate and Synod Buildings, erected in 1829 - 1834 according to the design of the architect Carlo Rossi in the style of late classicism, or Russian Empire. Built for two state governing bodies of the Russian Empire: the Senate and the Holy Governing Synod.
