Located in Eastern Kazakhstan, in the Kazakh part of Siberia. Located along the Irtysh River near the border with Russia. The first Russian settlement in the area dates back to 1718, when Russia built a fort on the banks of the Irtysh River, next to the ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery, where seven buildings could be seen. The fort (later the city) was named Semipalatinsk, which in Russian means 'City with seven chambers'. Since 2007, it has been renamed the city of Semey.
