Catherine I (Marta Samuilovna Skavronskaya, after accepting Orthodoxy Ekaterina Alekseevna Mikhailova, April 5, 1684 - May 6, 1727, St. Petersburg) - Russian empress, the first woman on the Russian throne. from 1721 (as the wife of the reigning emperor), from 1725 as the reigning empress, second wife of Peter I, mother of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna.
