"Bagni Russi"

Russian bath. From an early 19th century hand-coloured copperplate print.

Public baths in Rus' appeared in the 11th century. For example, it is known that Bishop Ephraim in Pereyaslavl organized baths in monasteries. The Pechora monks, after visiting Athos, having become acquainted with the Greek baths there, began to found them in Rus'. Gradually, the steam bath became an ordinary and familiar occurrence. In Rus', joint baths, where men and women washed, appeared in ancient times. But gradually they disappeared under the influence of the church. Also, Catherine II, by her decree (Charter of Deanery) of 1782, separated men and women in common baths.
