Edward III, antique engraving.
Portrait of Edward III (1312 - 1377), bust-length, slightly turned to the right, holding his sword against his shoulder, with a beard, a crowned helmet upon his head, in fanciful armour with a cloak over his left shoulder, the portrait surrounded by a scrolling foliate border with King John of France to the left and the captured Burgesses of Calais, St George and the Dragon below and an armorial above, after Vertue. Inscription content: Lettered below image "Edward III. From a Painting in Windsor Castle". Edward III, also known as Edward of Windsor before his accession, was King of England and Lord of Ireland from January 1327 until his death. He is noted for his military success and for restoring royal authority after the disastrous and unorthodox reign of his father, Edward II.
