"Imperial Library (Room of the Incunabula)"   

 

The Imperial Public Library is located in St. Petersburg on the corner of Nevsky Prospekt and Sadovaya Street. construction of a classic building designed by architect E. T. Sokolov began on 16 May 1795 and lasted about 15 years.
On 2 January 1814, the grand opening of the Imperial Public Library took place. Emperor Alexander I was present at the opening. Incunabula are books published in Europe from the beginning of printing until 1 January 1501.
The Hall of Incunabula (“Cabinet of Faust”) is located in the corner room of the lower floor of the Library. In 1857, the furnishings of the monastery library of the 15th century were recreated. On 22 January 1858, the Incunabula Hall was inaugurated. It contained about 7,000 incunabula.
