"Stage of stagecoach".

Stagecoach from the French “diligence”. Four-wheeled carriage with a roof. Used to transport passengers and cargo over long distances. Stagecoaches originated in England in the 17th century and became most widespread in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The stagecoach offered faster intercity travel by constantly changing tired horses at special stations. The importance of stagecoaches began to decline after the advent of railroads and river passenger steamboats.
