Trinity - Sergius Lavra. Antique copper engraving.

 

Trinity - Sergius Lavra (Trinity Monastery). Founded in 1337.
In 1337, Bartholomew (Sergius of Radonezh) and his older brother Stefan, monks of the Khotkovo Intercession Monastery, settled on Makovets Hill, ten miles from Khotkovo. The brothers erected a small wooden church in the name of the Holy Trinity (it was consecrated in 1340).
On July 8, 1742, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, by her decree, assigned the monastery the status and name of a lavra.
