'Tchernomorski Guard'.
'Manner in which the Tchernomorski Guard and Sentinels are stationed along the banks of the Kuban to reconnoitre the movements of the Circassians, their huts being filled with smoke, in the greatest heat of Summer to keep out the Musquitoes'.
Black Sea Cordon Line (Nizhnekubanskaya Cordon Line), built in October 1793, a system of fortifications (posts, batteries and pickets) built by the Russians along the lower bank of the Kuban, from the Izryadny Spring post to the shore of the Black Sea. The line was built to protect the inhabitants of the Kuban region from the continuous raids of the Trans-Kuban Circassians, who previously owned the lands.
