Closed educational institution for orphans, foundlings and street children. Established on the basis of the “General Plan” drawn up by I. I. Betsky and approved by Catherine II on September 1, 1763 and founded in 1764. A fundraiser was opened to finance the construction. The Empress donated 100 thousand rubles to the fund at a time and signed up for annual contributions of 50 thousand; P. A. Demidov made a large contribution, donating 200 thousand rubles for the construction of a maternity institute at the orphanage; I. I. Betskoy personally contributed 162,995 rubles. The largest building in Moscow at that time is located on the banks of the Moscow River, the length of the facade along the embankment is 379 meters.
