Calmuck Tartars.
Kalmaks are an ethnographic group of Siberian Tatars who live in the north-west of the Kemerovo region, near the city of Yurga. In the 17th century, some Teleuts from the central regions of what is now the Kemerovo region moved to the north and gradually lost contact with their southern relatives.
The Teleuts, for whom the term “Kalmak” is used, were part of the Dzungar Khanate. Previously, the Teleuts were known as the “White Kalmyks”, and their neighbors the Dzungars as the “Black Kalmyks”.
