Claude-Joseph Vernet (14 August 1714 - 3 December 1789) was a French painter
He was a leading French landscape and seascape painter of the late 18th century. He was also one of the finest painters of the century, depicting storms and moonlit scenes. Vernet became a member of the Academy on his return to France and in 1753 received an important royal commission for a series of large canvases depicting the ports of France (1753-65).
