Napoleonica — engravings

Engravings from the Napoleonic era form a unique collection of visual testimonies from one of the most dramatic periods in European history. Napoleon Bonaparte, his marshals and generals, the great battles—from Austerlitz to Borodino—as well as sharp political satire—all found expression in the printmaking of the first third of the 19th century.

This category includes both formal portraits of the emperor and his military commanders, executed by the finest French engravers , and battle scenes capturing key moments of military campaigns . A special place is occupied by Russian popular prints and caricatures—the famous "Terebenev Alphabet" and works by other masters who ridiculed the invaders and boosted patriotic spirit .

Created both in the immediate aftermath of events and in subsequent decades, these engravings allow us to see the era of the Napoleonic Wars through the eyes of contemporaries and descendants, to sense the scale of the emperor's personality and the tragedy of military conflicts that shook all of Europe.
