The assassination of Paul I, or the coup of 1801, occurred on the night of March 11 (23) to March 12 (24), 1801.
At night, twelve officers broke into the Mikhailovsky Palace, entered the emperor's bedroom and tried to force him to sign his abdication. As a result of the conflict, the emperor was beaten, hit in the temple with a heavy gold snuffbox and strangled with an officer's scarf.
