"Montagna Russa"

A roller coaster.

Roller coasters were a traditional Russian entertainment. We rode in Rus' most often on Maslenitsa. First from natural hills, and later, in cities from specially built slides. Under Peter I, Maslenitsa festivities with skating were held in the center of St. Petersburg. Under Empress Elizaveta Petrovna in 1757, in Tsarskoe Selo, a 60-meter-high roller coaster was opened. Under Catherine II, in Oranienbaum, another slide appeared, a 33-meter three-story pavilion. It was built by the Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi in 1762–1774.
