St. Basil's Cathedral (Cathedral of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Moat, or Intercession Cathedral), an Orthodox church on Red Square in Moscow, a monument of Russian architecture. The cathedral was built from 1555 to 1561 by order of Ivan the Terrible and is dedicated to the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. Until 1600, the cathedral was the tallest building in Moscow.
