The Great Peterhof Palace.
The Great Peterhof Palace is located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, 29 km from St. Petersburg. Initially it was a modest royal palace, built in the “Petrine Baroque” style in 1714-1725 according to the design of I. Braunstein and J. B. Leblon. In 1745-1752, by order of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, the palace was rebuilt according to the model of Versailles in the mature Baroque style, architect F. B. Rastrelli.
'Samson' is the central fountain in the lower park of the Peterhof Palace. Peter I wanted to install a fountain in the park in Peterhof in honor of the victory over Sweden, but did not have time to do it. The fountain was installed during the reign of Empress Anna Ioannovna, in 1735, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Poltava victory won in 1709. It is believed that the figure of Samson was chosen due to the fact that the Battle of Poltava took place on the day of Samson the Host. The lion is associated with Sweden, since this particular symbol is present on the country’s coat of arms.
