To protect the conquered region of the Azov Sea, a city and port were built in 1698. After the Turkish victory in the war of 1710-1711, the city and port of Taganrog were demolished before being handed over to the Turks. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-74, under Catherine the Great, this place again became part of Russia. The newly founded city was settled by Greek colonists. During the Crimean War, Taganrog came under siege by the British and French in 1855, but was not captured.
