A view of the Anichkov Palace from the Fontanka River, capturing the classic St. Petersburg perspective that artists of the 18th and 19th centuries so loved to depict.

The engraving, "nach einem Stich aus dem achtzehnten Jahrhundert" (from an 18th-century print), shows the palace in its original Baroque appearance, before later alterations.

The Anichkov Palace is one of the imperial palaces of St. Petersburg, built between 1741 and 1754 by architect Mikhail Zemtsov and later completed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. It took its name from the Anichkov Bridge across the Fontanka. The palace is considered the oldest surviving building on Nevsky Prospekt and played an important role in the city's history, serving as a residence for many members of the imperial family.
