Kuznetsk Tatars are the name of the Turkic-speaking settled population, including the Shors and part of the Teleuts, who lived in the northern spurs of the Kuznetsk Alatau. They received the name in the 17th century, even before the founding of the city of Kuznetsk, due to the development among them of smelting iron from ore and blacksmithing.
