Jean-Marie Chopin  - famous French publicist, personal secretary of Prince A.B. Kurakin, Russian envoy to the French court; studied literature and the history of Slavic peoples, mainly Russian. For many years he lived in Russia as the librarian of Prince A.B. Kurakin.

In his book, J. Chopin presented a complete description of the country, starting with its geographical characteristics and natural features of different regions (water and mountain systems, seas and oceans washing its territory, etc.). An abundance of statistical materials about the country is presented, revealing its diverse life and internal state in the era of Nicholas I. The book covers in detail the history of the New Age, starting with the reign of Peter the Great. Russian history goes back to the reign of Emperor Nicholas I. The publication is rich in ethnographic information, the customs and traditions of various peoples inhabiting the Russian Empire are described.
The second volume provides an overview of the southern regions of the empire: Crimea, the Caucasus, Georgia and Armenia. The book is richly illustrated, in it, on numerous engravings and maps, various regions of the country, all kinds of "views" of Russia are represented: architectural monuments, ethnographic types of various nationalities, images of social strata, views of cities, scenes from Russian history and portraits of statesmen.
