Austrian engravers — Schmutzer, Jacob Matthias Schmutzer

Jacob Matthias Schmutzer (1733 - 1811) is an Austrian painter and graphic artist.
He received his art education in Vienna and Paris, he studied the art of copper engraving with Johann Georg Wille. In 1766, the artist returned to the Austrian capital, where he received permission from the Empress Maria-Theresa to open the Academy of Graphics, in which Ya. M. Schmutzer became the director. Having founded the school of Viennese graphic art, the master of copper engraving trained a galaxy of students who made her famous.
In 1769, the artist published a series of color graphics, which most accurately depicted representatives of various cavalry units of the Austrian army during the time of Maria Theresa - hussars, dragoons, cuirassiers, etc. Later this series was recreated by Johann Christian Brand in paintings - in oil paints on wood, and now stored in the Vienna Museum of Military History. In 1912, one of the Viennese streets (Schmutzergasse) was named after the artist.
